Make Your Applications Portable
If you want the convenience of a menu from which to choose the program, have a look at Portable Apps.
Portable Apps offer a wide range of programs that can be run from a portable drive. Everything from Open Office Portable to media players, WYSIWYG HTML editors, anti virus software and games. The more applications you have, and use, the more space you will need.
There is a lite version as well, and it may be worthwhile using that until you get an idea of what applications you will use.
You can download the executable file to anywhere and then install it onto your USB drive.
I run this from an 8 Gb USB drive that serves me well when I am away from my home computer. On a recent overseas trip, this set up enabled me to keep up to date with my email, my web design work and whatever else I needed.
Yes, I needed to find a computer, but that was no difficulty.
There are also ways that you can take a full Windows XP installation on a USB drive as well. For that you need MojoPac.
